Why Use SMF’s Automatic Labeling System?

The labeling system is a key part of the production pipeline – choosing the right equipment is important to keep throughput high and keep costs manageable. Here are just some of the reasons why companies that go with SMF labeling systems aren’t disappointed.

Truly automatic labeling solutions

SMF labeling machines require little maintenance and oversight. The bottles are automatically lined up, packaged, and sorted all without human input. This cuts down on labor costs and makes it easier to scale production with demand.

Reliable, label applicator

Reliability is a top concern for SMF – our machines put on the labels with surgical precision ensuring minimal error. You don’t have to worry about faulty labeling and wasted products. Higher reliability has the potential to significantly cut down on costs.

Able to handle most bottle sizes and Label shapes

Even if your production line doesn’t handle many bottle sizes and shapes now, as your company grows, you’ll likely need to introduce new bottle sizes and shapes, you need an automatic labeling system that can handle them properly.

This is precisely what SMF machines offer. Not only can they handle many different bottle sizes, but they can also precisely apply a variety of label types and shapes. If you want to correctly label your products and make your brand stand out, choose SMF!

Can integrate into SMF’s ecosystem

Our automatic labeling machines integrate perfectly with our bottle-blowing machines and conveyor belts. If you want a reliable, automated system that can handle everything from A to Z, you can’t go wrong with our solutions.

Customizable, bespoke labeler to meet your company’s needs

Being able to scale up or wind down production with demand is crucial for a business, especially as most B2C bottling industries have relatively volatile markets. Our labeling machines are easily configurable and can scale up and wind down production to meet changes in demand, making your production line more scalable and efficient.

Automatic Labeling Machines

What Are Automatic Labelling Machines?

Automatic labeling machines are an integral part of the production pipeline responsible for labeling and branding the products. Pre-labeled products move through a conveyor belt, get picked up by a labeler, and get branded in the designated location. The type and size of both bottles and labels vary, so these machines use a variety of tools to get the job done.

What Is the Price of an Automatic Flat Labeling Machine?

The price of automatic labeling machines is highly dependent on their configuration, throughput, and size. It can range from as low as a few grand to as high as hundreds of thousands of dollars. It is important to get a label applicator suitable for your particular workload. Here at SMF, we carefully ask our clients about their requirements, specifications, and workload, and then match them with a bespoke solution tailor-made to meet all their demands.

What Are the Different Types of Automatic Labeling Machines?

When you are looking for a label applicator, it is good to know there are three different types of labeling machines:

  • Flat labeling machine: These machines put the labels on flat surfaces. Although they see widespread use in many industries, they’re less common in beverage and water industries, mostly used to put labels on bottle caps.
  • Side labeling machine: this machine puts labeling on the side panel of the workpiece. It is often used to imprint serial numbers, recyclability information, and more on bottles.
  • Circular/wrap-around labeling machine: the most common form of label applicator in the beverage industry, these labeling machines adhere wrap-around labeling to the bottles. This is where you’ll find the branding, key details about the product, and more.

FAQ

What bottle capacities can be produced using SMF blow molding machines?

SMF blow molding machines allow for the production of a wide range of PET packaging capacities. The range includes machines designed to mold small bottles from 0.2 liters, standard sizes from 0.5 L to 2.0 L, and large containers of 3.0 L and 5.0 L, as well as specialized kegs and gallons with capacities of 10 L, 20 L, and 30 L. SMF also designs molds for non-standard capacities, such as 0.3 or 1.4 L.

The Optima series blow molding machines are modern linear machines in which traditional kinematics based on pneumatic actuators have been replaced by precise electric servo drives. This ensures smoother and faster mechanical movements, complete control over the mold closing and preform stretching process, and eliminates the delays typical of compressed air-powered machines.

SMF linear blow molding machines are highly scalable. In smaller installations, the nominal capacity is approximately 3,000 bottles per hour (bph), while fully electrified and automated multi-cavity systems can operate at capacities ranging from 16,000 to 24,000 bph. Complete bottling solutions can, in turn, achieve variable throughput tailored to production needs, ranging from 1,000 to 34,000 bph.

The machines are equipped with advanced modules that effectively reduce the total cost of ownership (TCO). In electric machines (e.g., the Optima series), motors draw power only during movement, while servo drives drastically reduce the need for expensive compressed air. Cost optimization is also facilitated by heating ovens with high-efficiency IR lamps and integrated compressed air recovery systems (Air Recovery Systems), which allow for reuse of compressed air for pneumatic drive or pre-blow molding.

Yes, all modern SMF blow molding machines are fully compatible with preforms made from 100% recycled rPET. Precise stretching systems and advanced heating ovens compensate for the natural differences in heat absorption of these materials, ensuring the highest transparency and mechanical strength of the final packaging.

The Optima series machines are ideally suited for cleanroom production environments. The elimination of pneumatic drives means there is no risk of exhaust system deposits, compressed air contamination, or oil mist leaks. For this reason, these machines are widely used in the dairy, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, and food industries.

Thanks to the use of innovative technologies, the conversion process is highly automated and takes only a fraction of the time required in older generations of machines. Motion and speed parameters can be digitally adjusted by instantly loading the appropriate recipe for the new format on the HMI control panel. Furthermore, the physical replacement of molds (so-called quick changeover) has been simplified to the utmost, drastically reducing potential downtime.

Absolutely. The machines are equally effective in producing asymmetric and non-standard-shaped bottles, used in industries such as the chemical and cosmetics industries. Additionally, the offering includes solutions for specialized blow molding of hot-fill bottles, machines for handling wide-necked preforms (used for the production of PET jars), and equipment for the production of large-sized containers (over 5L).

Servo-driven technology significantly reduces the number of moving parts in the machine subject to wear, such as seals in valves and pneumatic actuators. This translates into an increased mean time between failures (MTBF) and reduced noise. An additional advantage is the advanced control system, which facilitates real-time diagnostics of potential errors and seamless monitoring of the machine’s overall condition.
